Keeping a Potty Training Child in One Spot

I'm slowly working on getting my 2 year old Car Man potty trained. He's almost 3, he's used the potty before so I know he can, and I'm tired of the mountain of diapers to wash!

I don't want to follow him around the house waiting for him to have an accident on the carpet or a couch or something, so I came up with a way to keep him on the  hard floor in the dining room/kitchen/living room area. I knew it would have to be something he LOVES, so it had to involve cars. This is what I came up with:

I used masking tape and quickly taped off borders and a dotted line down the middle to make a two-lane road on the floor. (And NO, I don't have time to edit out the red-eye! It's a miracle I'm typing a post at all.)

The kids all love this! I should have looked around for some painter's tape as this will probably leave behind sticky junk which I will grumble about cleaning up. But it's been worth it for the entertainment we're getting out of it.
They've used it for little people cars, matchbox cars, Can Man's trike, his big toy garbage truck and for simply running around chasing each other. So fun!

I've seen other sites suggesting making a cardboard track to put down, but that would be guaranteed tears at my house. Cardboard track pieces would move around when you tried to drive a car on them. That kind of things makes Car Man think he needs to shriek in frustration at the top of his lungs. Believe me, tape is SO much better. Just get less tacky painter's tape.

So, if you need to keep a potty trainer in one spot, or just want some car fun, give it a try!

  1. You are seriously brilliant. BRILLIANT I tell you! What a great idea, not just the road made of tape, but doing it with the purpose of keeping him on the hard floor! I will totally be doing this if/when I get my lazy carcass in gear and start potty-training Avery!

  5. Smart! What a great idea, and I glad you posted it. I will have to try that a little later in the year when we try to tackle potty training with my own 2 year old.
